Not so quiet

I’ve read before about a “problem” with electric cars: They’re too quiet. Pedestrians and bicyclists are at danger, particularly sight-impaired pedestrians. Hollywood to the rescue:

Working with Hollywood special-effects wizards, some hybrid auto companies have started tinkering in sound studios, rather than machine shops, to customize engine noises.

  • Cold wash: Hot, soapy water. That’s what it takes to remove germs, right? That’s the conventional wisdom. Hot water isn’t going to kill the germs, but helps remove the oils from the hands.

Can that knowledge. A study from 2005 shows that temperature has no effect on bacterial removal.

  • Fatter and fewer: Hilary Osborne is thinking about the change in cookbooks: Growing fatter, but including fewer recipes. The commenters speak up:

I’m not against fat cookbooks per se – big can be beautiful if the pages are stuffed full of actual recipes, or even useful pictures to show me how they are supposed to turn out. What annoys me is cookbooks which are carrying excess weight, ones filled with the kind of thing I don’t want to read in the kitchen.
