I figured my time would come eventually. Over the years a few downtown businesses have had their big windows broken and so far I’d escaped – until this weekend. I walked right by it on my way into the office Saturday morning, but when I sat down at my desk the two large cracks caught my eye.
Frank Cordts took a look and found what he thinks was the point of impact low on the pane. When Fred Smith stopped in from Maple City Glass, he thought the same thing, although he figures something was shot or thrown at it. I hope it’s nothing personal; just a random act of vandalism.
“The Morenci Observer” was painted on the window before I can remember. I’ll have to ask my father. I suppose the heavy glass was the original from 1912. Those letters will never again appear in an Observer quiz.
It will be interesting to watch the replacement process Monday. A little chilly, but interesting. Fred says the tape he used is NASCAR quality. It’s the kind used during races to put pieces of cars back together again.
Good news for the insurance company; bad news for me. The bill came to $551 and my deductible is $500.
