charit2.jpgHave you ever noticed the blue collection box at the Jasper market? Clothes and shoes are wanted. I took a close but not quite close enough look at it last night when I stopped for some much-needed Vernors. A greasy meal left my wife and I in distress. We bought a bottle to share and I thought as we left, “Let’s go get smashed.”

Anyway, I think the organization behind the box is called the International Institute for Community Development. The website address, if have it correctly, leads to nothing. Maybe I’ll just stick with Goodwill.

  • By the mid-1800s, this country was technologically advanced enough to know that a solar storm meant odd stuff would happen on Earth. An almost legendarily large storm took place in 1859:

Even 144 years ago, many of Earth’s inhabitants realized something momentous had just occurred. Within hours, telegraph wires in both the United States and Europe spontaneously shorted out, causing numerous fires, while the Northern Lights, solar-induced phenomena more closely associated with regions near Earth’s North Pole, were documented as far south as Rome, Havana and Hawaii, with similar effects at the South Pole.
