A Smithsonion blog entry invites readers to meet the contenders for the earliest modern human:
Paleoanthropologists agree that modern humans evolved in Africa about 200,000 years ago, yet the fossil evidence for the earliest examples of Homo sapiens is scarce. One problem is the difficulty in recognizing true modern humans in the fossil record: At this time, many of the fossils thought to be early members of our species possess a mix of modern and primitive traits.
There may have been some interbreeding with Neanderthals.
Hmm. Rather thick skulled.

200,000 years ago? How is this possible when our “mother and father”" (aka, Adam and Eve) are only 6000 years old?
Sybil- how do you believe the human race began? Evolution, some form of creation, something entirely different?
Without sounding like a smart-alec, not only do I not have a theory, I seriously do not care. All I know is Who created it and that’s good enough for me.
I meant to add that evolution does not preclude creation. It bothers the heck out of me when people try to imply that if one believes in evolution, then they cannot be believers in creation (with a small “c”). The evolutionary process can be accomplished by Divine Design.
You may be surprised you that I agree with you entirely. A Creator is not limited to create in a way we understand.
