A few happy tears from Brooke Bovee as she and Tia Tompkins are congratulated by coach Tim Yatzek. He was nothing but smiles.
Morenci wins 46-41 46-42 and moves on to Breslin Center at M.S.U. Thursday night. I haven’t seen the other results yet, but we’ll likely play Central Lake from the U.P. They’re undefeated, ranked no. 1, and they have the Free Press Miss Basketball on their team. She’s scored more points than any boy or girl ever on a Michigan high school team.
But you know what they say, win or lose, it’s going to be fantastic to play in the semifinals. First time for Morenci since 1974.
Now excuse me while I go address your newspaper.
I had it mixed up:
Morenci (16-9) vs Bark River-Harris (21-4) – 6 pm
Central Lake (26-0) vs Waterford Our Lady (20-5) – 7:50 pm

Thanks for keeping us updated.
The exciting thing was when I saw the EMS unit drive by slowly with lights flashing and then the two buses with their lights flashing and players and fans screaming as they passed. I hadn’t listened to the game and it was only then I knew we had won.
A geographic note. Central Lake is NOT from the UP, although it may seem like that. It is in northwestern portion of the lower peninsula about 40 miles northeast of Traverse City. It is about the same distance southwest of Horton Bay(although not easy to get to because of all the lakes). Their best player has not only scored more points than any other boy or girl in the state (career and year) but the same is true for rebounds. This year they seem to have a better supporting case than last year. Good luck to Morenci !
Thanks, Cousin Tim. I was hoping nobody from Up North would notice that error.
