Morenci’s overtime win against Sand Creek was the closest thing I’ve seen to the good old days of basketball since I don’t know when. I’m not sure when the good old days ended, but the gymnasium used to be packed to capacity when Sand Creek was here. The crowds are never that large anymore, but at least the homecoming event brought in some extra people.
I think the dwindling attendance started a few years ago, then really went down with the new scheduling as girls basketball moved to the winter in Michigan. I’m not blaming that for the change because I think scheduling could be altered to make it less confusing.
Either make it like the Buckeye Border Conference – the girls get Friday night for one half of the season and the boys get it on the other – or be even bolder and have the boys and girls JVs play one night and the boys and girls varsity on another.
By the way, 68-60 in overtime.
