Not so cool

The Italian company Eni has raised its cooling temperature by 1.8 degree F. to save on utility costs and reduce emissions. Last summer the company reduced electrical consumption by 9.5%. As a trade-off, ties may be removed and lighter, more casual clothing can be worn.

I’m always puzzled when I walk into an air conditioned business and see employees wearing long sleeved shirts or light sweaters to keep warm. I jokingly refer to it as a sign of a great empire in decline.

It’s 82 in the Observer office today. Not bad, except for the humidity. And I’m the only one here to “enjoy” the heat.

Extra crazy: In NYC, nine businesses were fined for leaving their doors open to entice customers into their cool depths. Reminds me of the outdoor restaurants in Miami that turn on heaters on chilly evenings. More decline.

You seem to be focused on wasted energy. There are multiple forms of waste that indirectly impact our energy supplies and have an energy costs. Don’t get me started. How much it bothers you probably depends on how you were raised and what your occupation is.
