Superintendents discuss school finances

Faced with drastic funding cuts, superintendents from all 12 Lenawee County school districts met Thursday to encourage state lawmakers not to make schools the latest casualty of the statewide budget crisis.

During a press conference, Del Cochran, president of the Lenawee County Superintendents’ Association and superintendent of Adrian Public Schools, said governor Jennifer Granholm’s proposed $122 cut in per pupil funding could prove unmanageable for the many districts already near the brink of financial insolvency.

If the funding cut is approved, Lenawee County schools would lose an estimated $2,170,460 a year, with a $108,198 projected loss for Morenci.
