Substitute teacher policy appeared on the Morenci Board of Education agenda again this month, but no action was taken after superintendent Kyle Griffith suggested tabling the issue for a month.

Board members voted in March to join other county districts in signing a contract with Professional Education Strategies Group (PESG) to move substitute teachers into the private sector.

This eliminates the need for districts to pay into the state retirement fund. In Morenci’s case, about $6,000 a year is expected to be saved.

After board members voted to work with PESG, one issue remained: a decision of whether or not to “grandfather” veteran substitutes into the retirement system.
