Baseball:

Last year’s youthful baseball team is looking a little more mature this season.

With six seniors on the squad, Morenci coach Adam Foltz expects the Bulldogs to come through with some solid games this year.

“We only had one senior last year,” he said. “I think everyone’s ready to go. Everything seems to be coming together and I have a squad I really like a lot.”

Softball:

 The gaping hole on the mound. The changes in position. Question marks all around.

Morenci softball coach Kay Johnson expected the return of an experienced pitcher from last year’s young team that included 10 freshmen and five sophomores. Then Jade Pfund began developing shoulder problems.

As it stands now, Johnson will have a freshman on the mound and she’s still shuffling players around the field to find the best matches.

Girls track:

 Morenci track coach Brad Brown sees some good talent among his girls squad. He’s just not seeing enough of it.

With just a dozen girls on the team, the Bulldogs won’t be able to compete for the top spot in the league, but he expects Morenci to be able to earn its way into the middle of the pack.

The Bulldogs are thin in the sprints and unable to fill sprint relay teams, but in a change from recent years, the field events look stronger.

“We could come out of the field events with the lead in many meets,” Brown said.

Boys Track: 

Last year, it was Whiteford on top of the boys track standings in the TCC, followed closely by Morenci.

And this year? It could very well become a repeat.

Morenci coach Brad Brown would like to see the Bulldogs on top this time around, but he lists the Bobcats as the favorites.

Actually, he thinks the Tri-County Conference will be very competitive this season, filled will good talent across the range of schools.

“Obviously we’re looking to compete with Whiteford,” he said. “We both lost only a couple runners and it could be another good battle.”
