Wrestling is coming to Morenci—first in September and then again next June at the Town and Country Festival. Morenci city council members voted July 28 to guarantee a $1,000 loan for the festival committee and to loan as much as $1,000 more, if needed, to pay for a wrestling fund-raiser in September. Phil Monahan will bring his Championship International Wrestling show to Morenci next month featuring competitors from the area, to serve as a fund raiser for the festival. The festival committee is considering a Sept. 6 show date, but had not made final arrangements for use of the school gymnasium. Next summer, Monahan would bring in a wider range of wrestlers from outside the area for outdoor entertainment at the festival. Morenci mayor Doug Erskin was told that Monahan produced successful fund-raisers in Waldron, Adrian and other area locations. CEMETERY—Council added a mausoleum entombment fee to the schedule of cemetery fees. The cemetery sexton is occasionally asked to open a mausoleum when a family member is interred, but no fee for the service had been established. TERRORISM—In order to be eligible for funding through the United Way, council approved an anti-terrorism compliance resolution. FIRE DEPARTMENT—Dereck Bode and Nathan Reeser were approved as new members of the Morenci Fire Department. |
