Impressive. Very impressive.

That’s the obvious statement to make about the total dollar value of scholarships  awarded to Morenci senior class members this year.

It’s not just this year. Year after year, the dollars invested in local graduates is simply amazing. Last year’s figure topped $200,000. This year more than $175,000 will be used by college-bound students who aim to further their education.

The large number is impressive in two ways. First, it signals the academic achievements of students. Many scholarships are competitive and the money goes to the best.

Equally impressive is the willingness of people to share their resources and contribute to the cause. In some cases, it’s a family trust that gives year after year. Other scholarship programs are fueled by the hard work of members of an organization who organize benefit events to keep the scholarship funds growing. In that case, the generosity of local residents comes into play, also, as they participate in the events and part with some cash.

Finally, many colleges offer generous scholarships—again many of them supported by gifts from alumni.

Morenci students are fortunate to have the financial resources available to assist in the ever-increasingly more expensive endeavor of higher education. Send a note of thanks, kids, and use your gifts wisely.
