| Tyree Guyton visit good for Morenci 2008.05.07 |
|
Morenci’s Stair Public Library did it again, bringing to town another special guest to give area residents the opportunity to interact with someone far away from ordinary life in Morenci. Detroit artist Tyree Guyton has gained fame—and some notoriety—around the world and the library staff took advantage of a rare opportunity to bring him to town through the Library of Michigan’s Notable Books program. Guyton’s appearance was only half the show. The remainder of the event came from residents of Morenci and beyond. The art work created to accompany the Guyton visit added another dimension to his presentation. Art students in Morenci’s three schools are always creating pieces, of course, but the nature of Guyton’s work led to new directions for art teachers and their students. Various themes from the Heidelberg Project found their way into student projects. An unexpected bonus arose from residents who don’t consider themselves artists. Several people who don’t ordinarily make art—perhaps never make art—used their creativity to produce an array of altered books with interesting themes. Although more than 120 people attended the standing-room-only session with Tyree Guyton, most residents of the area haven’t yet taken a look at the art produced. Library staff members asked for community participation and they got their wish. Make a point to visit the library and look around. Items will be on display at least through May 17. |
