| Morenci schools: Bond proposal deserves support 2008.04.02 |

Is no news good news? We haven’t heard much talk about the school bond proposal nor have we received any letters to the editor—either for or against the issue. A lack of response might mean that opposition isn’t all that strong, leading to a successful campaign for much-needed maintenance funds. If that’s true, we hope supporters of the measure don’t become complacent when election day arrives. Thinking the measure will pass, then staying away from the polls could lead to the opposite outcome. Those opposed to the measure are more likely to make sure their voice is heard at the ballot box. A “Vote Yes” campaign was formed to work for passage of the bond and the group is looking for help in getting the word out. Anyone feeling strongly about supporting the issue should head for the library downtown April 10 to join in and see what can be done to help. The maintenance work needed at the elementary school and high school will have to be done sometime in the near future. The school district’s general fund can’t come close to furnishing the money needed. No one—whether or not they have children attending school—should be in favor or additional cuts in the classroom to pay for plumbing and roof work, etc. We’ve stated our support for the bond in a previous issue of the Observer and we’ll repeat it here. By voting to maintain the millage from the middle school construction project for five years—rather than allowing the amount to begin decreasing—a large number of maintenance needs will be addressed, and it will happen with no increase in the existing debt millage. It’s a smart way and the least painless way to get the job done. |
