Fayette bus drivers compete in Road-e-o 5.14

Four Fayette bus drivers competed as a team in the annual Northwest Region Road-e-o in Sylvania and placed sixth out of a dozen teams.

Fayette drivers have competed in the past, but this is the first year they’ve entered as a team. Ryan Eberly, LaWonda Keefer, Cheryl Shaffer and Rod Sommers participated.

Out of the 70 drivers competing May 3, Eberly placed ninth, earning a spot at the state competition May 17 in Columbus as an alternate.

The Road-e-o tests drivers on all skills pertaining to driving a school bus. A written test covers general knowledge and pre-trip preparations. Driving challenges include turning, turnarounds, railroad crossings, student loading, maneuvering through tight places and alertness.

The state education department encourages school districts to participate in the test to make drivers more aware of the skills needed. The event also gives drivers the opportunity to meet school bus operators from neighboring districts.
