| Fair Week: Fayette school board made a wise choice 2007.11.21 |
|
We believe the Gorham Fayette Board of Education made a wise decision Monday night in turning down a resolution that called for fair week vacation. A teacher, a parent and an administrator each gave persuasive arguments against the week off and three board members agreed. With school closed on Labor Day and again the following day for Jr. Fair Day, that should be enough of a break so close to the start of school. 4-H is an important organization in a rural community such as Fayette. If some students need to be at the fair during the other three school days of fair week, perhaps board members will decide to grant them excused absences. As someone suggested at the meeting, check with the 4-H office for fair events to see if attendance during school hours is really needed. The board made a sound decision, but there’s still room for compromise if needed. |
