It all averages out in the end.

Well, almost, says Morenci climate observer George Isobar.

So far, the heavy rains of August don’t average out the below-average precipitation from September.

“We ended up with 1.74 inches last month which is about half the average of the past 30 years,” Isobar said. “But still, that doesn’t even out the wet August.”

The average from the last two months is 5.8 inches and the long-term average is 3.65. Add July to the mix and you get five inches for the last three months, compared to a four-inch long-term average.

With June’s rain added, the average for the past four months drops to 4.4. inches.

“That’s getting closer,” Isobar said, “but it’s still half an inch more than we usually get. That was a really exceptional August.”

September was notable in that it rained on only five days for the entire month. Two of those days produced less than a quarter of an inch.
