Fayette band is a great community effort 6.6.07

OK, the performance wasn’t polished and the instruments weren’t always in tune, but perfection probably wasn’t the driving force anyway.

You have to give them credit. The new Fayette community band gamely and cheerfully gave an entertaining and innovative performance Friday night.

The presentation provided a fine evening interlude, and interspersed with Dr. King’s groaner jokes, the effect was downright small-town charming. Dr. King kept the show rolling and provided a unique event with lots of upbeat and lively variety in the hour-long performance.

Band members displayed a shining example of the participatory arts—people doing something, being actively involved in community life rather than passively sitting at home. It was invigorating to see a group of people take an active part in making their own music and sharing their enthusiasm with others.

The mix of ages among the band members, from school kids to senior citizens, all having a good time together and making a pleasant evening for others, just radiates good will.

The nearly 100 people who showed up to hear the performance should be likewise complimented. Supporting the arts isn’t always about spending money. Just being there, being a part of the audience gives the band a reason to continue, to improve, to stick with it.

New members are invited to join in the fun, or perhaps there’s even interest in starting another band in Morenci. There are latent musicians everywhere, just waiting for the opportunity to make some music together.
