Purple Sputnik

Any of you over the age of 55, perhaps, remembers the Russian satellite Sputnik. It was somewhat of a frightening occurrence when Sputnik was launched. It made us realize that the Soviets were ahead of us in space exploration. They even sent an astrodog into space before we sent our first mice up.
I think Sputnik was the first orbiting satellite and it looked sort of like this thing in the photo here: a miniature, purple Sputnik.
Does anyone have anything to suggest for the use of the purple Sputnik, beyond an interesting conversation piece.

I’m always looking for a good snack. Send some south- I got the salt shaker ready.
The Halloween, after Sputnik was launched, my mother made a costume for me out of cardboard and aluminum foil. I remember being told to turn round and round as I walked so the antennae would stand out from my body. I think I had to wear a sign too- so they could figure out what this dizzy little kid in a silver box was supposed to represent.
It wasn’t purple?
