Water beetle

Mr. Speelman brought me a present yesterday: This critter in a plastic jar. He found it in his yard while mowing. I knew it was a beetle of some sort and later learned it’s called the giant black water beetle. It’s very sleek for moving through water and has great little filaments on the back of the legs for propulsion through water.

Like a duck out of water, this was a water beetle far from home.
