You’ve probably seen the insects that look like giant mosquitoes. Of course they aren’t really and they probably suffer greatly from the resemblance as people smash them with the thought that something that big could really deliver a bite. I’m guessing they’re crane flies and they’re not suckers of our blood.
I was watching one on my back porch recently. I saw it flying around and suddenly stopping as it got caught up in spider web. It broke loose but then I noticed the spider hanging down from it on a web. It was a rather small spider, even in relation to the crane fly.
They flew across the room together and the fly finally landed. The spider went to work quickly. A line of web trapped the fly as it flapped its wings wildly trying to get away. The spider finally got in close for a poisonous bite, then backed off and waited. That fly was done for.

Crane Fly. I’ve seen them but never took the time to track down a name. Thanks.
You didn’t try to set it free? Aw, David.
I did try to move it once they had landed, but it was too late. Spider has to eat, too.
