Costco is stopping the sale of a dozen fish species after several thousand e-mail messages arrived. That follows similar action at Target (you can buy fish there?) and Trader Joe’s:
Among the fish being pulled from display cases are Atlantic cod, Atlantic halibut, Chilean sea bass, grouper, monkfish, redfish, swordfish and bluefin tuna. Sales of these and other at-risk species will not resume until a sustainable source can be identified, the company said in a statement.
I better carry around the Avoid list from Seawatch at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I’m shopping in ignorance. In some cases, it’s not the species that should be avoided. It depends on where it was caught and how it was caught. Lake Erie perch makes the “best choice” list.
