Super weeds

Some people are calling for more regulation on biotech crops due to herbicide-resistant weeds. Many from the ag community would probably bill this as anti-farming, but that’s not the way Rep. Dennis Kuchinich sees it:

“Now, more than ever, farmers need to have a Department of Agriculture that takes care to preserve and protect the farming environment for generations to come,” Kucinich said.

Michael Owen, an Iowa State University weed scientist, says that farmers “value the convenience and simplicity of these crops without appreciating the long-term ecological and economic risks.”
